Lit Cadet Program Grows

At the start of second semester, the Literacy Cadet program gained five new students. Bethany Cunningham, Brittany Kube, Maggie Norton, Heather Unger, and Felicia York joined the ranks at the start of the new term. The students meet in the Elsberry High School library each day during their assigned hours and complete tasks required of them, receiving English credit as a result.
One of the opportunities made available to students enrolled in the program is working with younger students. Cadets also focus on creating goals for life after graduation – as they head for college or make their way as adults. Frequently, assignments apply to work being completed in other classes. For example, sometimes Cadets write papers for other classes, and Miss Busiere, Lit Cadet coordinator, assists students with revisions.
When asked how well she likes the class and why, Bethany Cunningham commented, “I like the class a lot because it’s kind of like an independent class where you do most of the work without depending so much on the teacher all the time. It’s nice to know that I can do things on my own from time to time.”
First semester students who have remained as Lit Cadets during second term include Angela Lindhorst, Amy Martin, Mindy Rhoades, and Amber Tobiasz. Lindhorst and Martin are in their second year of service to the program.
