Mr. Hunter and his psychology class had an amazing lab this year. After learning about the brain, the parts, and the different functions of the areas of the brain, students dissected sheep brains. Sheep brains are structurally similar to the human brain, although the frontal lobe that is responsible for deep thought and critical thinking takes up a significantly smaller percentage of the brain than humans.
After removing the dura mater, the tough outer coating the best they could, students located various parts of the brain. They distinguished between the left and right hemispheres, the different lobes, cerebellum, spinal cord, the optic nerves, and the olfactory bulbs. After examining the outer surface, we used the scalpel to sever the corpus callosum, which is a bundle of nerves connecting the left and right hemispheres of the brain. From there, they were able to locate some of the more primitive internal parts of the brain.
This was not a required lab. A few students opted to go to the library instead. Some opted to watch and not touch. Each option was OK. They all seemed to enjoy the process.
